Coopetition refers to a very specific type of alliance, i.e., one with one or more direct competitors. This strategy can sometimes produce remarkable results. This is what the authors show us through five illustrative case studies. They successively describe the coopetition system set up by the Pic Saint Loup winegrowers, practices used by the real estate industry to share exclusive mandates, the key factors behind the successful alliance between Sanofi and BMS around Plavix, the original growth strategy chosen by an outsider in the backcountry trail running equipment market, and the application of the spirit of coopetition in the soccer industry. Each case is clearly described, effectively underlining the benefits of this type of alliance, but also the key success factors. Written collectively by a team of researchers in economics, this book, while a bit theoretical at times and employing technical research terms, is full of practical lessons on the art of conducting successful coopetition strategies.
