This book builds on the Great Place to Work Institute’s work to identify the factors that contribute to making a company a “great place to work”. The author structures his analysis around three major themes. Initially, he inventories everything that influences the work environment, such as workspace architecture, work climate, workday structure, or the level of friendliness. He then explores the theme of motivation, by showing how the best companies manage to mobilize their employees and cultivate a strong sense of belonging and loyalty. Finally, the last part of the book is devoted to recruiting and talent retention, to the extent that the reputation and culture of the company are excellent drivers to attract—and retain—the leaders of tomorrow.
Very concrete, this book provides many examples of initiatives taken by companies to offer employees an attractive work environment. It also relies on many psychology studies that demonstrate the impact on productivity of factors such as the layout of office space, friendship among colleagues or the pride of working for someone you admire.
While not all of the examples are within reach of just any company (the names of Facebook, Google and other Silicon Valley giants are often cited), this book is replete with tips that can be tested to reinforce people’s desire to give their all for the company!
