How can human resources management reconcile the organization’s agility imperatives with the expectations of the young generations? Edward E. Lawler III first notes there is a gap: human resources management has evolved much more slowly than society over the past few decades. For example, studies show how, for the past 20 years, there has not been any notable change in the manner in which HR managers allocate their time. Yet, to remain attractive and high performing in the digital age, the company will need to fundamentally renew its talent management practices. Once the problem stated, the author successively highlights the major challenges to address: how to attract, select, develop, evaluate and reward talents? He prompts organizations to abandon their standardized approaches to favour a more personalized talent management approach. He also recommends they adopt a more strategic vision of talent, to respond to the needs to constantly renew and adapt competencies.
A book that would have gained by including more concrete business practices, yet has the merit of asking the right questions.
