Crises’ frequency and scale are continuously increasing. Climate catastrophes, political and social conflicts, or terrorist acts have multiplied over the past few years. According to the author, the trend should persist. Between massive urbanization, climate change and economic globalization, all the conditions are there for more numerous crises of a greater magnitude. From this premise, Judith Rodin highlights the importance for both public collectivities and enterprises to develop their resilience—that is their capacity to absorb the shocks and bounce back. She provides an in-depth analysis of some crises’ examples: Boston Marathon’s attack, the 2011 tsunami in Japan, Hurricane Katrina, etc. She describes the contrasted reactions of the citizens, authorities and local enterprises, during and also after the crisis. She highlights, based on these examples, the factors that make organizations more or less resilient. Although not centered on enterprises, this book is full of teachings for every manager who wishes to understand the levers of resilience.
