This very practical book offers a detailed exploration of the different components of nonverbal language. Following a chapter warning of the dangers of interpreting isolated signals hastily and out of context, 100-some pages are devoted to a methodical study of the different vehicles by which human beings communicate, e.g., bodily posture, facial expressions, eye contact, position of the hands and feet, movement through space and physical contact. Readers in a hurry can jump directly to the final chapter, which summarizes tips on making a good impression, speaking in public, forming constructive relationships and boosting personal charisma. More curious readers will surely want to peruse the second-to-last chapter, devoted to the intercultural dimension of body language.
Although the highly detailed descriptions can make for slow reading at times, this book offers a rich store of information, and the humorous illustrations, photos and anecdotes are fun and stimulating. Numerous exercises are also provided to help readers put the key lessons into practice.
