The author tackles here the theme of networking under the original perspective of the “connector”. Her guiding idea is that playing go-between is the best way to extend your influence and keep your network active. In concrete terms, this consists, for example, in organizing meetings between people who would benefit from working together, or in highlighting the achievements of the different people to make them visible to other members in your network. In a first section, Michelle Tillis Lederman lists the various advantages of a connector’s posture—notably an altruistic positioning and a more optimal investment of time. She then describes the seven characteristics of a good connector. This will consist, for example, in being social and curious, trustworthy, capable of taking a step aside to understand the vision and needs of others, and in rejoicing over their successes. These are all traits of character that can be developed through practice. Finally, a last section addresses more technical aspects of influence, notably the good use of digital tools, indispensable to connect with the new generations.
An interesting perspective for managers who are eager to improve their ability to work on their network.
