It is rare that prominent business leaders reveal their weaknesses or pour out their feelings. Sheryl Sandberg, COO at Facebook, classified by Forbes among the ten most influential women in the world, has written an out of the ordinary book. In it, she testifies to the tragedy that struck in 2015 when she suffered the loss of her husband. She describes her mourning and its effects on her professional behavior and self-confidence. She also describes the way she rebuilt herself, i.e., what helped her get through this difficult period, how she managed to come out of it changed and stronger. She cross-checks her personal experiences with those of others who have suffered a sickness or professional setback, inviting us to think about the basis of resilience. How do we bounce back after suffering tough blows or failures? On what or whom can we rely: those around us, ways of thinking, concrete practices? She also delivers ideas on how to help others through these painful moments. What can we say? How should we behave toward an employee going through times like this? Written with Adam Grant, a professor at Wharton, this book combines lessons from personal experience with contributions by top experts on resilience—including psychologists and philosophers in particular.
