Managers have the delicate task of continuously finding the right balance between being too hands-on and too hands-off, between developing people and ensuring short-term results, between availability and autonomy. All managers dream—without too much hope—of an ideal model defined once and for all, where they would know how to behave and exactly what to do.
This is a mistake, underlines the author. There is no right management style. A good manager must be able to adapt to people and situations. Yet, some benchmarks can help define needs and the best tactics to motivate subordinates, help them develop their skills and autonomy, stimulate their performance, etc., while mitigating the risks and maintaining a certain degree of consistency. This is the message conveyed by this handy guide, which offers some perspective and many suggestions based on operational reality.
A simple model useful at all levels.
