Is benevolence in business simply the hot topic of the moment? Or conversely, is it the very essence of more effective management? The authors of this book, respectively a doctor and HR director, lean toward the latter option.
They explain how fostering positive emotions and minimizing negative emotions is critical to employees’ wellbeing—as well as to their performance. In particular, they show the psychological effects caused by these emotions, which influence our ability to concentrate, our creativity and our level of energy. From there, they suggest concrete action plans for managers: express gratitude, help people better understand the coherence of their decisions, watch out for certain attitudes that may seem contemptuous, etc. The book ends with a philosophical afterword where Aristotle, Saint Thomas Aquinas and Kant are evoked to trace the origins of the concept of benevolence.
