“Generation Y , mode d’emploi” [“Generation Y, User’s Manual”] deciphers the fundamental trends that have shaped young people born after 1980 who are now arriving in great numbers on the labor market. The authors show how this generation is upsetting the traditional rules of behavior in companies. To keep both young employees and managers from falling into the negative spiral of frustration, they provide the keys to understanding these youngsters and how best to integrate them with preceding generations.
The first part of the book is particularly useful in grasping what makes these young people tick and the frame of reference underlying their attitudes, demands and motivations. The other two parts will help managers situate their own management practices relative to young subordinates and convey an essential message, i.e., don’t think that youth will simply mature with time and fall into line, because their behavior and attitudes result from a fundamental sociological evolution. To get the most from these employees, a better strategy is to learn to deal with their specific characteristics!
