Co-written by an ethics professor at Stanford University and a CEO, this book accomplishes the feat of being both very practical and methodological and supported by the fundamental thinking of great philosophers. Business practitioners will find this book of real operational use, as well as a resource for “maturing” their thinking about the topic.
The authors first review the various temptations that everyone inevitably experiences in their professional life. They incite readers to start by developing their lucidity with regard to ethical questions, and propose many very relevant checklists for this purpose. The “newspaper headline test,” for example, will help clarify if you are really comfortable with a decision.
One important recommendation is to write down—ideally before being faced with any ethical dilemma or when an issue arises—your “personal code of ethics.” Although this exercise may seem excessively painstaking or utopian, the advice proposed in chapter 4 will help you undertake it constructively. The nuanced message of the authors will reconcile skeptics with the notion of the code of ethics.
A realistic and enriching book.
