Summary
A majority of disabilities remain invisible. Vast numbers of people who have them choose to hide them, often for fear of the gaze of others. Are they likely to be pitied by people? Do they run the risk of being perceived as less competent? The psychological cost of this taboo is not insignificant: the employee exhausts themselves trying to conceal a part of their identity; the company is unable to meet its legal obligations and social responsibility in regard to employees with disabilities. How can we create a safer environment, so that employees with disabilities feel free to talk about their situation?
